The Symptoms and the Sickness (Part I)

Upon arriving to campus for the fourth year, I encountered, once again, my biggest pet peeve: pedestrians and cyclists not following the rules. Now, I know that sounds quite stupid to complain about people not following rules, but when you have a campus of 40,000 people, and everybody has somewhere to go, and they all have to get there quickly, the efficiency of traffic becomes highly important. This problem has two major causes. The first, and more minor, is that people seem to not recognize that a bike is legally considered a vehicle, with all the rights and responsibilities of a vehicle. The second cause is a more widespread, far-reaching phenomenon, of which the discourteous pedestrians and cyclists are only a symptom of the greater disease: rabid individualism.
